Academic research

PhD thesis:

My project focuses on the isolation and characterisation of novel natural products from cyanobacteria. During my first year, I sampled interesting habitats in Indonesia like waterbodies, soil or biofilms and successfully isolated about 100 cyanobacteria strains, which now need a lot of attention. Thus my daily work comprises strain maintenance, cultivation, taxonomic characterisation, as well as biological and chemical screening of the strains. Here, the biomass and media extracts of the cyanobacteria strains are tested for antimicrobial, quorum sensing inhibiting and protease inhibiting activity. In case of interesting activities, I try to isolate the responsible compounds e.g. by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and other chromatographic techniques, followed by structure elucidation using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, tandem High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS), or other techniques.
